Good Evening Families! We had an amazing week in our class this week. The students started learning about how force causes motion. We took to the playground to investigate if we used a push or a pull on many of the activities that the kids love at recess. The kids found out that many of the games and playground activities took both pushes and pulls to cause the students to move. We will continue our study this week as we learn about Newton's Laws of Motion.
In math we have been reviewing fractions, area and perimeter, and multiplication properties as we prepare for the state math assessments which we will take this week. Please have your child rested and make sure they have a good breakfast before coming to school. We will test on all days except for Wacky Wednesday. We are currently involved in a novel study of Charlotte's Web. Students have enjoyed reading the classic and participating in many different writing activities. They just finished writing about how they would go about bathing a pig. I gave them a little leeway to be silly, but school appropriate. I can't wait to read their final drafts. FFA Day at the Farm was a huge success again this year. Students learned about all types of farm animals, how to care for those animals, and enjoyed a hayride around the fairgrounds. The high school FFA class does a great job making the day enjoyable for all! Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!! Missy Miller On Thursday we had a delightful trip to the Museum at Prairie Fire. The kids learned about how the brain works, were able to explore in the discovery room, pet a cockroach and a corn snake named Kernel. I was very pleased with how the kiddos represented Tonganoxie Elementary School. They behaved well, asked great questions, and had a wonderful time.
I would also like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all the parents who came on our trip. It would not have been as successful without you!! In science we have been studying extreme weather conditions. The class researched tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods. They learned about the dangers of each kind of storm, characteristics of the storms, and damage that might be a result of those storms. The class was then given scenarios where they had to use critical thinking and problem solving to build a house that could withstand a high wind event. Our second challenge involved building a flood barrier to protect a dog house in the back yard. The kids worked in groups to design their plans using a budget to buy their supplies, create, and then test their projects. We had an amazing time. Below I am attaching pictures from both events. Enjoy!! Good Evening! Can you believe only 27 days left before summer break? It seems like yesterday when your sweet children entered my classroom. They continue to make me smile everyday. We have great news! We welcomed our first two master multipliers into class today! David and Reid have successfully memorized all facts through 12. Way to go David and Reid!! We are quickly approaching our last state assessment. The class will take the math assessment the last week of April. In math class we are reviewing concepts that we learned through the year. This week we reviewed rounding, addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will cover fractions next week and follow up with area and perimeter right before the assessment.
In reading we started a class novel study over Charlotte's Web. It is a classic tale that has great vocabulary and a familiar story plot. The kids are enjoying reading the novel and look forward to comparing it to the movie toward the end of the year. This coming Thursday is our field trip to the Prairie Fire Natural History Museum. Please remember to send a sack lunch and drink with your child on Thursday. If you are a parent who has volunteered to attend please report to the classroom by 8:30 to go over groups, and the agenda for the day. We will load the bus at 8:45 and leave Tongie about 9:00. We will return to school around 2:00 p.m. Parents who are attending, please remember you will need to pay the $5.50 entry fee upon arriving at the museum. You will also need a sack lunch and drink. Jackie Schooler and Casey Wilson are the parents whose names were drawn to ride the bus. All other parents will need to drive or carpool to the museum. April 22nd the third grade will travel to the Tonganoxie Fairgrounds for the annual FFA Farm Day. The high school FFA class works hard during the year preparing a memorable day for the third graders. All students will need a sack lunch and drink for this day as well. Due to the nature of the event parents do not need to attend. However, you are always welcome to join us at the fairgrounds. Our class spelling test will be on Thursday upon returning from our field trip. No school on Friday, April 15th. |
