Third Grade Spelling
Third grade spelling will take a pattern/phonics driven approach that teaches your child to use spelling rules and patterns to help develop their phonemic awareness and spelling ability. Lists have been taken from our current reading series, Journeys.
Weekly Lists: Each week your child will receive a list of 16 words that follow one particular phonics pattern and 2 challenge words that follow the same pattern. Lists will come home on Monday and tests will be on Friday. If your child misplaces the list you can always find the weeks words on the blog page of the website. Also, at the bottom of this page is a document containing the lists for the entire year.
Classwork Expectations: Each child will be given an activities page with their list of words. During the week your child will be required to complete at least 3-4 of these activities either during class or at home as homework. If your child is in need of more challenging activities the classroom teacher will give them a list of challenge activities along with the basic activities. They will need to choose at least 2 of the challenge activities for their three required assignments.
Dictation Sentence: Each week starting in the 2nd quarter there will be one dictation sentence using 2-3 of the spelling words and words that third graders should be able to spell. The dictation sentence will be given with the spelling test.
