We will have 22 students in our class as we welcome a new little girl from Lawrence on Monday. Our party will be from 2:30-3:00. I am still in need of a volunteer who would like to bring in a craft or a game for the party.
Math: We continue to learn the basics of multiplication. This next week we will test our knowledge and prepare to start chapter five that will teach us how division is related to multiplication. Then we will start working on memorization of those facts and applying different properties of multiplication to help us better understand the process of multiplication and division.
Reading: We have started unit two in reading. This week our focus has been identifying character traits (how the character is on the inside) and how the author uses clues in the writing to reveal those character traits. The students have done a great job using their inferencing skills to identify character traits. Next week we will look in depth at setting and start talking about how most stories have a plot.
Social Studies: The class will be learning about economics and how the economy works. We will have a small classroom economy and build budgets around a "salary" that the kids earn for doing their jobs in the classroom.
Spelling: Our list this week will be a review of the first 8 lists. There will be one or two words from each previous list for our basic ten words. Students will need to show their mastery of the phonics patterns and how well they learned the words from previous weeks. We will also test this week on ALL the quarter one no excuse words. If you have misplaced those words, you can find a copy on the spelling page of our website.
Last but not least this week we had a special visitor on Thursday afternoon. KC Wolf came and talked to us about having outstanding character. He said all we need to do is follow the ABC's. A stands for attitude, it is up to you to choose how your attitude will be during the day. B represents your behavior. Each child has a choice over the type of behavior they exhibit each day. And C stood for character, who you are when no one else is watching. Are you honest, respectful, responsible, caring? The kids had a great time and enjoyed seeing a local mascot during the day.
