Math: We will finish up chapter 2 this week with a test on Tuesday. We will then introduce our chapter on subtraction with regrouping. I have been very pleased with the students understanding of addition with regrouping. The kiddos have worked hard to understand how the different properties of addition help them to understand the underlying concepts of addition. The properties are simple...
Commutative Property: the addends can be in any order and the sum will remain the same; ex: 3+2=5 2+3=5 or 3+2=2+3
Associative Property: the addends can be grouped in any order and the sum will remain the same; ex: (7+2)+5=14 7+(2+5)=14
Identity Property: any number added to zero will always be itself; ex: 34+0=34
The big difference between commutative and associative is the number of addends and the associative property deals with parenthesis.
Writing: This week we typed our Summer Vacation paragraphs and illustrated them. They will be displayed on our bulletin board shortly. We will begin an integrated Social Studies and Writing project around the community of Tonganoxie. We will be doing some research on the history of Tonganoxie, government, and reasons to visit Tonganoxie. The students will be making a tri-fold brochure highlighting our great community.
Reading: We will finish up benchmark testing this week and start guided reading groups hopefully by the end of the week. In our whole group lessons we will be reading about Roberto Clemente and learning how specific events cause other things to happen.
Field Trip: You should have received a note about our upcoming field trip to downtown Tonganoxie on the 29th. We are looking forward to discovering all the businesses and services that are available here in Tonganoxie. This is always a fun trip and we need lots of parents to help keep our groups small, so if you can participate that afternoon we would love to have you!
This afternoon we will head downtown for the homecoming parade. I will post pictures later this weekend. Have a wonderful and safe weekend and I look forward to seeing your sweet children on Monday!
