Math: The class will finish and test on our subtraction with regrouping chapter on Friday of this week. The kids have done a nice job in daily work taking their time and working through regrouping. They have also learned how to find a reasonable answer using estimation. Our best tool to help us we have found is using addition to check our subtraction. The students have learned that addition and subtraction are inverse operation, so they undo each other. What a great way to check our answers.
Reading: This week we head back into our basal reader and will be learning about bats and why they like the night. We will have a comprehension test on Friday. Students are encouraged to start reading these stories on their own and digging deep for information. This will help prepare them for the state assessments that they will take later in the school year.
Social Studies and Writing: Our class will start our Tonganoxie Brochure project. Students have been doing research learning about the history of Tonganoxie, local attractions, and quick facts. They will be taking that information and creating a brochure on the computer using the paragraphs they have created for their writing assignments. I am hoping to having these done and displayed for parent teacher conferences next week.
Language: We will be finishing up learning about nouns. Last week we talked about the many ways to make a singular nouns plural. On Friday we worked in cooperative groups to sort nouns according to the appropriate rule for making it plural. Each group was responsible for making sure each of their members understood the rules and how to apply them. Once we finish up with plurals early this week the class will start investigating verbs, verb tense, and noun verb agreement.
Fundraiser: On Monday we will have our kick off for our PTC fundraiser. Last year this fundraiser raised over $25,000 for our school. This year we would like to add to that number as the PTC is wanting to expand the playground equipment that is available at recess times. Please be looking for those packets to come home this week.
Tonganoxie Historical Museum Field Trip: Next Monday our class will head out after lunch to visit the Tonganoxie Historical Museum. Notes came home the end of last week with details for dates and times. I will need several parents who can volunteer to help out during the day. Please know that younger siblings can not attend this trip. Our note said that our class would need a sack lunch. Since our scheduled time to leave is after lunch, students can eat school lunch that day. If they would like to bring a lunch that is fine, however not necessary.
Have a wonderful week!
