Field Day Information
Our field day event will be this coming Tuesday, May 2nd (rain date will be Thursday May 4th) at the Chieftain Park and THS football field area. The third grade will be walking to the park and riding busses back to school after our events have concluded later that afternoon. Below you will find information about the day. Lunches: All students need to bring a lunch and drink as we will eat at the VFW Park during or scheduled time. If you ordered a school lunch for your child, they will pick it up at the park that day. Water Bottles: All students are asked to bring a water bottle with them for field day. They will be responsible for transporting the water bottle with them from station to station. Please label all water bottles with your child’s name. Sports Wagon: If anyone has a sports wagon they would be willing to let us borrow on field day I would be highly appreciative. This will allow us a safe place to put water bottles, first aid kit, and other needed materials for the day. Team Shirts: Our team color will be gray. Please have your child wear a gray t-shirt that day. Sunscreen: Please apply sunscreen on your child before they leave for school on field day. We are rushed in the morning and I will not have time to apply sunscreen to all students. Schedule: I have a schedule of events for our class on the back with locations for each event. The HS and rec commission have asked us not to run or be on the large soccer field as they have had to reseed. Please walk around the outside on the sidewalks. Cameras or phones: Please do not send cameras or phones with your child. Mrs. Miller Good Evening! I pray that every family enjoyed the Easter holiday today. I spent the day praising my Lord at church, then with family for the afternoon. As I look ahead for this week I know we have a busy week ahead.
On Tuesday and Thursday we will be finishing up the state assessment testing as we take the math assessment this week. Friday we will travel to the Leavenworth County Farm Day event that the high school FFA class sponsors each year. This is always a fun and informative day. Please be sure to send a lunch and drink with your child that day. Also please make sure they have a jacket or are dressed appropriately. Many times the mornings are cool and we will be outside the entire time. Once returning to class we will take our spelling test and participate in afternoon lessons. On May 2nd we will have our annual field day. Third grade will walk to the high school track and park area and ride the bus back to school that afternoon. All students need to have a lunch and sturdy tennis shoes for that day. Students are also being asked to bring a water bottle that they can fill at the park if they run out of water. Please have these bottles marked with their names. I am also looking for anyone that has a sports wagon that I might borrow for the day. That way we have a place to put water bottles while we travel from event to event. Our first event will be around the playground area at 8:30. Parents are welcome to meet us there and hang out for the day or wander between all their kiddos!! Please remember to apply sunscreen to you child that morning before school. I will make a schedule and send it home before field day so you will know where we will be for the day. Thanks! Missy Miller Good Morning! I was glad to see all my smiling third grade faces as we started our last leg of third grade today. We have a very busy schedule over the next several weeks and before we know it, school will draw to an end. Our class welcomed a new student, Tex, from Idaho on Thursday before spring break.
State Assessments: Next week we will start our first of two sets of state assessments. On Tuesday and Thursday we will be taking the ELA (Reading) assessments. Then on April 18 & 20th we will take the math assessment. Please plan appointments and trips around these dates. Students need to have a good breakfast and plenty of sleep so they can do their very best on these assessments. This week I will be talking to the kids about the assessment, giving them a sneak preview to what the test will look like, and talking about setting goals for the upcoming testing. Day at the Farm: Each year the high school FFA class presents a Day at the Farm to the third grade classes. On this day we will travel to the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds and learn about different aspects of farm life. Students will be receiving a note about lunches that day by the end of the week. This week we will be starting a new math unit on area and perimeter. Students will learn the basic concepts of how to measure and determine the area and perimeter of various shapes. We will finish the unit with a fun extension activity where the kids will work in groups to design a zoo using what they have learned in the unit. In reading we will be reading a story about Surviving on Mount Everest, focusing on identifying the main idea and supporting details in this non-fiction text. For science we will be starting a unit on magnetism and experimenting with magnets. Enjoy your week! Mrs. Miller Friday we will head to the Museum at Prairie Fire in Overland Park. Our busses will load about 8:50 and return to school by 2:00 p.m. that afternoon. We will be learning about the World's Largest Dinosaurs. Students and adults attending need to bring a lunch and drink in a disposable bag. Please dress according to the weather. Prairie Fire has asked us to not bring in heavy coats or jackets, so students need to wear a sweatshirt or jacket that can be tied around their waists if they become to warm.
Parents who are attending the field trip will need to be to our classroom by 8:35 on Friday. The $5.50 entry fee will be paid at the museum upon entering that day. Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Barker will be the parents who will ride on the bus with us to the museum. All other parents will need to provide their own transportation, or carpool with other parents attending the trip that day. Please remember that no siblings can attend this field trip. I am looking forward to a wonderful time and great learning experience for the kids! Mrs. Miller Good Evening Families! I had a wonderful time talking with you during our conference times over the last two days. I love the progress that each of the kids are making as we look toward the end of the third quarter. Over the next several weeks we will be working on many new skills in reading and math.
Math: We will be starting a new unit on Tuesday over measurement. We will learn about capacity, volume, length, and elapsed time. This unit is a fun hands on unit as we will work on comparing different sizes, measuring and converting measurement, and learning how to find elapsed time, Reading: Our main focus this week will be story structure and the author's purpose for our basal story Sarah Plain and Tall. In grammar we will be working on adding suffixes to words, learning when to double a consonant, drop the y and add an "i", or simply add the suffix. Science: The class will be starting a new weather unit. We will learn about different hazardous weather situations, how storms form, and how we can protect ourselves in the event of hazardous weather. This unit will follow up with a couple of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic) activities. Be looking for more information in the upcoming blog posts. Well, it has been a long two days and I am getting ready to head home. I hope you all have a safe and wonderful extended weekend. Missy Miller It has been a crazy couple of weeks since returning to school after Christmas break. The class has been busy working on their animal research, writing the research paper from their research, and we have been benchmarking to see reading growth since the beginning of the school year. I am pleased with how the kids are growing and learning this year. We have finished up multiplication and division in our whole group math lessons and will move onto fractions this week. Fractions are a new concept in third grade, though some have some foundational understandings as our second grade teachers did a nice job introducing fractions during their math win classes last year. We will be learning the basics of how to identify fractions, fractions of a set, using a number line to identify fractions, comparing fractions, and finding equivalent fractions. We will continue to work on basic multiplication facts as all students need to have the basic facts memorized by the end of the school year. In science we will finish up our adaptations unit in a couple of weeks. This week we will have several different stations that the students will work through that will provide a hands on approach to different types of animal adaptations. Our flip books and animal model are due by next Wednesday, with our typed research report being due on February 14th. The kiddos are finding that they are really having to dig into the information about their given animal to learn enough to write about the animal. In reading this week we will continue to work with non-fiction texts and a little poetry at the end of the week. Field Trip Reschedule Date: We will head to the Museum at Prairiefire on Friday, March 10th, 2017. The exhibit has changed, but will still be fascinating and fit into our science standards. We will be learning about the World's Largest Dinosaurs. Auction Baskets: Our class has partnered up with Mrs. Wynn's class to create a KU basket for the PTC Silent Auction that is held on the day of the school carnival. Please send in any KU items that you would like to donate to help make the auctions fundraiser a huge success. Parent/Teacher Conferences: Parent Teacher conferences will be held on February 15 and 16th. You will be receiving notes home soon with the time of your conference. Valentine's Party: A huge thank you to Katie Aufdemberge who volunteered to call parents for donations for our classroom party. The party will be held on Tuesday, February 14th from 8:30-9:00. All students are encouraged to bring a Valentine for each classmate. I will be sending home a list of students this week with the kiddos. Happy New Year! Well, we have 4 days under our belt in this new year. The class has been working on refreshing routines and expectations in the classroom. We have been busy working on multiplying larger numbers using different strategies. The class also started our first science unit on animal adaptations. In reading we worked on discovering the feelings, motives, and traits of our main characters and how they developed within our basal reading story. We have a busy week coming up, here are some of the highlights.
On Tuesday we will be having RIF (Reading is Fundamental), each student will get a free book that they can keep and enjoy. We will start up our guided reading groups again as well as our main basal story for the week. In math the class will start chapter 9 which will focus on using properties of multiplication. They will learn about multiplying three factors, and how to break down a multiplication problem using the distributive property. We will kick off our Ice Cream competition in math. Students will be challenged to memorize their multiplication facts through 12. For each level they pass, the students will work toward earning an ice cream sundae party on the last day of school. I will be sending home an informational note later this week with details for parents. I will provide the ice cream, cookie, bowls, and spoons. I ask the kids to bring in their favorite topping. The kids always love this challenge, and its a way to celebrate a job well done at the end of the school year. On Friday we will be heading to the Museum at Prairie Fire. This is our big field trip for the year, and is always a trip that the kids enjoy. Students and adults attending will need to bring a sack lunch and drink. Parents please remember you will need to be to our classroom by 8:30 Friday morning. Our bus will leave at 9:00 and return to TES around 2:00 pm that afternoon. Our Valentine's Party is right around the corner. Our class will celebrate from 8:30-9:00 on February 14th. I am looking for a volunteer to call parents and organize snacks for the morning. If you would be willing, please send me a note or give me a call. |
